Vannamei Shrimp
Vannamei is a crustacean shrimp that originated from the eastern Pacific coast of Central and South America. Vannamei shrimp’s natural habitat ranges from Mexico in the north to the Tumbes, Peru, in the south.
COLOUR
The colour of Vannamei is typically translucent-white. The body can display a bluish hue due to a predominance of blue chromophores. Those are concentrated in the margins of the telson and uropods. Colour variations are also shown in cases of nutritional deficiencies.
Life stages
Vannamei has six life stages. Subsequently, it becomes a post-larva and adopts a benthic lifestyle.
The carapace length of Vannamei post-larvae ranges from 0.88 to 3.00 mm. The lack of a thoracic spine on the seventh sternite can recognize the larval stages. Relative rostral size against the length of the eye plus eye stalk ranges from 2/5 to 3/5, rarely 4/5.
What is a Vannamei Shrimp Like?
An examination of current lists of invasive species published by the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Invasive Species Specialist Group revealed no listings for Vannamei.
Vannamei has been introduced as an aquaculture species to several non-native areas. That includes the USA, Belize, Brazil, Venezuela, South-East Asia, etc.
There have been numerous escapes from aquaculture production facilities into non-native waters. But this species is regularly caught in the wild around Asia. Also, it is unproven whether breeding populations have been established outside their natural range. Thus Vannemai shrimp is totally safe for keeping the ecosystem balance in non-native waters.
